Day 3 (Postponement)

So, as lots of you know I made the difficult decision to postpone my ride today and it is just that a postponement as I’m off to cycle the Spain leg next week but with back up! I also intend to take on the ride again in the spring when hopefully the weather will be better and I can have more back up in place! It’s going to take me a little while to reflect on this experience and think about what happened. I’ll write more on that in another posting. For now though I’m safely home with my family and feeling warm and dry, something that at my darkest point, in a town in the middle of nowhere and mildly hypothermic with nowhere to stay, I wasn’t sure would happen! Anyway as I said I’m going to take time to reflect and use the Spanish leg in order to do that. Will keep you posted on how that goes!

Thank you so much for all the supportive messages you’ve sent over the last few days it made a huge difference to my resolve!

More to follow soon! 🙂

Day 2

Well, well, well!!! Now that was what I call a day!! Got lost a couple of times but plodded onwards in to what turned out to be quite a strong headwind which had the added bonus of driving the incessant rain in to my face!!! I’d never planned to go too far today because of the crossing but just couldn’t believe the conditions!! It culminated in arriving in a town that had the promise of 2 hotels where I could dry out and finding them both shut!! Not a campsite in sight either!! So with no other options I rolled up to the gendarmerie!! I eventually got to talk to a gendarme who despite the darkness and rain suggested that my best bet was to cycle another 20km to what he told me was the nearest open hotel and wished me ‘Bon Courage’ as I left!! To be honest the ride wasn’t so bad as the rain eased and I used my satnav as encouragement with its countdown!! So I am now holed up in a reasonable hotel and dry and warm but not very far up the road as the detour ended up taking me backwards too!? I have no fixed plans yet for tomorrow as thunderstorms are forecast so I will wait and see what the light of day holds!!! Thank you all for all your encouraging messages they truly keep me going!! Now it is definitely time to sleep!!! 🙂

Day 1

Wow! What a day!! I am now tucked in a lovely comfortable bed!! All started well with a wonderful send off from church! Had a pretty good ride down to the dartford crossing where Colin kindly gave me a lift over!! I then set about getting to Deal and was plodding along fairly well until it got dark and really cold!! It was a bit tougher but all came to a head when I discovered the A2 was shut blocking my only real route through!! After a couple of frantic phone calls and a chat with one of the guys working on the road they let me through the cordon and told me to go off at the next exit and keep going and I would get to the right place! After a few tough hills and scary dark corners I managed to drag myself into Canterbury where a very friendly face was waiting for me! I took a lift here to Deal as apparently the road from Canterbury is pretty dodgy in the light and a real no go at night! I gladly accepted the lift and the warm hospitality I received when I got here! I am totally full up, bathed and ready for sleep!! Tomorrow is another day! I’m off to catch the ferry and see what France has to offer!! Thank you to all those who sent wonderfully encouraging messages they really kept me going!! And now too sleep!!

Good night!
